Pasta Threading Activity for Toddlers

Updated: Aug 25, 2019

An activity that’s easy to set-up and gives your toddlers a chance to have a wonderful time playing while developing their fine motor skills.

What you’ll need:

  • Penne pasta

  • Straws

  • Playdough

Let your children poke a few straws into the playdough and start threading the pasta onto each straw. Using Penne pasta is a good choice because it gives your toddlers less room for error and is a great starting point for children to develop their fine motor skills.

It’s very important for your children to feel a sense of achievement when completing this simple task so don't forget to praise them for a job well done!

This is also a great activity for developing your child’s concentration to a particular task, because as we know how toddlers rarely sit still…

Keep in mind…

  • Handling the tiny pasta strengthens the coordination in your toddlers' fingers to prepare them for writing.

  • Don’t get upset if your children just want to make a mess. You can always try again when they can focus more.

  • This activity can be easily adjusted to different developmental levels – a simpler option can be using rings cut from a toilet paper roll instead of pasta. A more challenging option can be using BBQ skewers and smaller types of pasta.
