Straw Necklaces

Updated: Aug 25, 2019

A fun, creative, educational, and very simple activity to do while helping your toddlers improve their fine motor skills.

What you’ll need:

  • Colorful plastic straws

  • Scissors

  • Sting/shoelaces

  • Pipe cleaners (if making bracelets)

  • Tape

5 Easy Steps:

  • Cut the plastic straws into small pieces – let older kids use child safety scissors and the straws themselves

  • Measure a length of a real necklace and cut the string – once again, older kids can do the cutting themselves

  • Tape one of the ends of the string to the table, making it easier for the children to start threading the straw pieces without them falling of

  • Let your children thread the pieces until the string is colorful and full of straws

  • When they are finished, take off the tape and help them tie both ends to create a beautiful necklace

Pro Tips!

  • The best part is letting the kids wear the necklace they made!

  • The more colorful the straws are, the better! You can try making different patterns such as rainbows, holiday colors, etc.

  • You can start by using pipe cleaners instead of the strings, it will be easier! Just don’t forget to make one side as a big loop so the necklace pieces don’t fall off.

  • Handling the tiny straw pieces strengthens the coordination in your toddlers' fingers to prepare them for writing.
