Coffee Filter Tie Dye Experiment

Fun and simple decorations your little one can create through a simple chemistry science experiment. Show your little one the way the colors run and blend together coming in contact with water.

What you’ll need:

  • Coffee filter

  • Washable markers

  • Disposable gloves (optional)

  • Newspaper or area to work on

  • Straws

  • Scissors

  • Tape

4 Easy Steps:

  • Place coffee filter on newspaper (to avoid a mess) and color in half the filter with your washable markers

  • Fold your filter in half again and again until it forms a small triangle

  • Turn on the water faucet (or dip in a bowl with water) and place just the tip of your coffee filter triangle under the water (wear the gloves to avoid a mess). Just the tip needs to get wet. This will cause the colors to run and blend up the filter

  • Squeeze your fingers over the filter to remove excess water, open and let dry

Tip:

To create flowers, twist the middle of the coffee filter to form a flower shape, cut the tip and insert a straw. Tape around the straw to secure in place.
