Coffee Filter Tie Dye Butterflies

Fun and simple butterflies your little one can create this Spring through a simple chemistry science experiment. Show your little one the way the colors run and blend together coming in contact with water.

What you’ll need:

  • Coffee filters

  • Washable markers

  • Disposable gloves (optional)

  • Newspaper or area to work on

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Elastic band

Easy Steps:

  • Place 2 coffee filters one on top of the other

  • Color in half the top filter with your washable markers

  • Keeping one on top of the other, and spray with water

  • Let dry

  • Fold each back and forth, like an accordion

  • Separate the filters from each other (a similar pattern should be on both filters)

  • Place one on top of the other and secure the middle with a rubber band

  • Wrap with a pipe cleaner leaving two “antennas” sticking up (you can curl the antennas as well – see image)

  • Glue the middle sections of the wings together to reveal your beautiful butterfly
